This girl has green earrings. She always wears these earrings, if she is coming to my house or going to her house. She has a red sweater.

The Lost Bunny

~~~ Late Autumn 2001
One hot summer evening Freya Soledad and Grandma went to the Park Library and playground. There were many clouds gathering in the sky, and the weather was starting to cool off and to feel pleasant. Freya held her little bunny on the way to the park. "Tie it, tie it", Freya asked of her Grandma while they were driving. The tiny bunny had a tiny pink ribbon around his neck. The bow was half undone.
At the swings, Grandma took the bunny and tried to tie the bow, but it was too small. Freya cried out, "Tie it"!
Grandma pushed the loose part of the ribbon under the bunny's shirt, and Freya smiled happily. They found some friends at the park. Avadnia was playing on the slide. She was one of Freya's friends, and a year older, but still very little.
Isaiah, Avadnias brother, was in the soccer field. After a while she had to go to the soccer field to watch her daddy play. Mostly it was so her dad could watch her play.
Freya and Grandma walked the long distance to the grassy field. They passed a lost tennis ball, and they saw a few white soccer balls. The field was marked off with green and red markers.
They reached the area where Avadnia was playing a game by herself. Freya and Grandma rested there, and then Freya kicked around a soccer ball with Avadnia. Mosquitoes and small gnats buzzed around. Dark clouds were appearing in the distance, but the western sky was still sunny and pleasant. Freya was having a wonderful time, running and kicking the ball. Soon the girls tired of this and Grandma suggested they go over to the playground. Avadnia had to ask her daddy's permission.
The little bunny that Freya was holding was forgotten, left in the grass near the soccer balls.
The three went over to the playground.
After a while, it became clear that the wind was carrying the smell of rain. They went back to the soccer field, and Freya Soledad and Grandma walked the distance back to the truck.
The wind was picking up mightily and it was getting dark. Suddenly Grandma said: "oh, oh, I think we forgot to take the bunny". Freya was very sad. She would like to go back to find the bunny. But Grandma thought it would be better to wait until the morning, and then return to the park. They walked on. The clouds were purple now, and there were pink patches where the setting sun left a glow. They were walking facing into the wind. When they reached the car, Grandma said to Freya. "Here is what we will do. We will drive over to the playground, and take the flash light and go and look for the bunny on the soccer field."
So that is what they did. On the way to the soccer field though, the wind really picked up. Some dust was blowing right in their faces, and Grandma thought that Freya was a very strong and big girl to not complain. Freya was making an effort to go and find the bunny, and she was not complaining about the oncoming storm. When they had almost reached the grassy field, Freya called out, "I see the bunny". "Well", Grandma said, and she was cold and tired now, "I don't see the bunny at all. I am not sure if he was found by one of the soccer players or even by Avadnia". Freya looked hopeful at this prospect. At least he would be with someone she knew, a little friend who might possibly give him back one day.
Grandma looked over to the area where they had been playing. She saw two white spots. She walked up to the first one, and shined her light, and it was a dried up leaf, an oak leaf. Grandma walked up to the second white spot, and she became very excited. "I think I see the bunny"!
Freya started to run to the spot where the light was shining. There in the grass lay the bunny, face down.
"Bunny", Freya said happily, and picked him up. Then they both started back to the truck. Now the wind was very strong. They were propelled along from behind by the strong wind. Dust was spinning up from the desert floor, and swirling around them. Still, no rain came down. There was no crashing thunder. There was just distant lightning. They had weathered the advancing storm, found the bunny, and now they drove home. Freya and Grandma had a real adventure.
I Like Himmel Park Better
by Freya and Grandma
Today I told Freya that we were going to a wild animal park. And Freya said, I don't want to go to a wild animal park. I want to go to Himmel Park.
But I said, I have some friends who are going to perform Indian dances at the wild animal park. And one time I went to this park and I saw 15 little Javelinas.  And Freya asked: "Did they bite you"?
No I said, but I had to go back into the car so I wouldn't frighten them or make them angry. And Freya said, "I'm afraid to go there".
I packed a lunch, and we got into the truck, and Freya said, I want to go Himmel Park. But instead we went to the wild animal park and on the way I told Freya how animals live in the great outdoors in the desert and they don't always bother people.
Freya said: "if you don't bother them they won't bother you."
I explained how sometimes bobcats, deer, snakes, bear, and Freya stopped me and said: "I don't want to see any bears".
The was cool and grey clouds, which turned into rainy weather. I started to worry that the dancing wouldn't take place. But we kept on driving. We finally arrived at the park, which was called Saguaro National Park East.
There were many cars and the dancing was taking place inside the visitor center. We walked together under a small blue plaid umbrella. Freya was wearing a shiny red leotard, with a red skirt from Guatemala, white tights, and brown school girls boots, that her daddy brought back from his trip to London. Freya went and sat down on the floor next to me, and took off her boots.
There were many people and children dancing inside. The dancing was in a circle, people taking small steps, and wearing Indian dance costumes. I saw my friends who were from the Navaho tribe, and they were Lenny Redhouse, Mary Redhouse, and their mom, Maria Redhouse, and their famous dad, Rex Redhouse. Rex was playing the music and beating a drum for the dance.
Freya was sitting in my lap and she asked "who is that in the black shirt"? I said I didn't know that woman.
After the dancing we went up to say hello to Lenny and Mary.
Outside in the visitor center, there were many pictures of animals for Freya to look at. We sat on the couch and looked at a book of all the animals who might have visited the park. I say visited, because these animals were not behind a fence, not in a zoo cage, but were free to go where ever they wanted to, over the mountains, across the streams, and in the water.
Freya looked at a book that had pictures of skunks.
We talked about the smell that skunks have for their protection when they are scared.
Then we looked at the shelf with the bones of the heads of different animals. There was a mule deer skull, a white tailed deer antler, a big mule deer antler, a bobcat skull, an empty tortoise shell which was big. There was also a rattle snake skin that Freya picked up, and some turkey vulture feathers. A coyote skull was there too. At the end of the dancing, Rex Redhouse had told a story, and he howled exactly like a coyote.
We saw some young girls weaving baskets out of grass.
One of the girls spilled some water and Freya brought her some napkins to wipe it up. We saw how the baskets were made in a circle and wrapped and Freya said she wanted to learn to make baskets.
Freya said, "I learned about wild animals living free and I am not so scared anymore." We went home, and we watched the video called "Born Free".
